The Oil and Natural Gas Industry may be divided into three major sectors: Upstream, Midstream and Downstream. Each sector plays a critical role in the exploration, production, transportation, processing and distribution of oil and natural gas resources.
UPSTREAM
The Upstream sector, also known as the Exploration and Production (E&P) sector, primarily focuses on the exploration, development and production of crude oil and natural gas.
Exploration activities involve identifying potential underground or underwater oil and gas reserves, drilling exploratory wells and evaluating the commercial viability of discovered resources.
Once reserves are identified, production operations include drilling and operating wells that extract crude oil and natural gas and bring them to the surface for processing and transportation.
Upstream expenditures generally fall into three categories:
- Property Acquisition
- Exploration and Development
- Production Operations
Property acquisition includes costs associated with acquiring proven and unproven reserves. Exploration and development cover activities related to locating reserves and establishing production infrastructure. Production expenses involve the extraction of oil and natural gas after field development.
MIDSTREAM
The Midstream sector serves as the connection between upstream production activities and downstream processing and distribution operations.
This sector primarily focuses on the transportation, storage and marketing of crude oil, natural gas and petroleum products.
Transportation methods include:
- Pipelines
- Rail Networks
- Barges
- Oil Tankers
- Road Transportation
Midstream operations are responsible for moving crude oil from production sites to refineries and delivering refined products to downstream distributors and end markets.
In the natural gas sector, pipeline networks collect gas from processing facilities and transport it to industrial, commercial and residential consumers.
The sector also focuses on storage optimization, transportation efficiency and pipeline risk assessment to ensure reliable energy supply chains.
DOWNSTREAM
The Downstream sector primarily involves refining crude oil, processing natural gas, manufacturing petroleum products and distributing finished products to consumers.
Activities within this sector include:
- Refining Crude Oil
- Natural Gas Processing
- Storage Operations
- Product Marketing
- Transportation and Distribution
Downstream operations ultimately connect the energy industry with end users through a wide range of products including:
- Gasoline (Petrol)
- Diesel
- Kerosene
- Jet Fuel
- Heating Oil
- Fuel Oils
- Lubricants
- Waxes
- Asphalt
- Natural Gas
- Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)
- Petrochemicals
The downstream sector plays a vital role in transforming raw hydrocarbon resources into products that support transportation, industry, power generation and daily consumer needs.
