Abstract

This three-part series provides insights into the use, impact and regulation of renewable energy in India. Part 1 presents a general overview of the renewable energy sector, Part 2 discusses the regulatory framework governing renewable energy, and Part 3 addresses topics such as storage and transmission, pricing, taxation, employment and financing within the sector.

Part 1: General

India has emerged as one of the world’s leading renewable energy markets, ranking among the top countries in renewable energy installations. As of December 2021, India had an installed renewable energy capacity of approximately 151.4 GW, including solar, wind, hydro and bio-power projects.

The renewable energy sector has experienced significant growth due to strong government support, increasing energy demand, technological advancements and rising investments. In 2021–22, renewable energy investments in India reached a record level, driven by large acquisitions, debt financing and equity investments.

India has also made substantial commitments towards clean energy transition, including the development of Green Hydrogen infrastructure and ambitious renewable energy targets. The Government aims to establish more than 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030 and achieve Net Zero emissions by 2070.

Key drivers for the growth of renewable energy include India’s commitments under the Paris Agreement and COP26, the need for energy security, reduction of dependence on imported fossil fuels, and geopolitical developments affecting conventional energy supplies.

The article further examines India’s energy mix, utilisation patterns, investment trends and policy initiatives that are shaping the future of the renewable energy sector.
