Introduction

In simple terms, ‘to pollute’ means to contaminate the soil, air, and/or water with substances that are harmful to health. Pollution affects the very existence of living beings as well as inanimate objects, making it one of the most critical environmental concerns of our time.

The gravity of the situation resulting from pollution is hardly subject to debate. The key question is how society approaches the issue of pollution, particularly soil pollution, and whether the existing approach requires a shift. Traditionally, the response has been largely limited to a legislative approach.

Soil forms a significant component of both rural and urban environments, and its quality is directly influenced by land management practices. Soil is a thin layer of organic and inorganic materials formed through the decomposition of rocks and organic matter over many years, covering the rocky surface of the earth.

The uppermost dark layer of soil is organic in nature and is formed through the decomposition of plants and animals. Beneath it lies the inorganic portion, consisting of rock fragments that break down physically and chemically over thousands of years.
