Introduction

Energy is significant for accomplishing the objective of higher economic growth, as it is closely related to consumption. At present, fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal meet around four-fifths of the world’s total energy demand and are expected to remain dominant over the next two decades.

India’s primary energy share in global energy consumption is at its highest ever, making it the third largest energy consumer in the world. Among primary energy fuels, coal remains dominant at 58.1%, oil contributes around 28.5%, and gas accounts for about 6.5%.

Among non-fossil fuels, nuclear and hydro account for approximately 1% and 4% respectively, while renewables contributed around 2.2% in 2015.

In the coming years, India is expected to contribute more to global energy demand than any other large country, driven by sustained economic growth and significant industrial activity.
